Talladega Superspeedway is situated north of Talladega in Alabama and is the largest Superspeedway on the NASCAR circuit with a seating capacity of nearly 145,000. Opened in 1969 the formerly named Alabama International Motor Speedway was Bill France Sr. dream of seeing a track that was longer and faster than that of Daytona International Speedway. With speeds of well over 200mph commonplace Talladega, along with Daytona, restrictor plates were introduced to reduce not only the maximum speed but also the time it takes for drivers to achieve their full speed as well. With a 2.66 mile long track it is the place for record-making with Bill Elliott setting an all time qualifying lap record of 212.809 MPH in 1987 and on the 10th of June, 2004 Rusty Wallace tested a stock car without restrictor plates to make a record of top speeds on the straights at 228 mph and an average speed per lap of 221 mph. Talladega Superspeedway is host to three NASCAR events.
The are the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the first one, in April, being the Aaron’s 499 which was known as part of the sports four legs of the traditional "Winston Million" (with the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600 and the Southern 500 being the other three). From 1985 to 1997 a driver who won three of the major races received a million pound bonus. The second one, the Talladega 500 is run in October and is part of the "Chase for the Sprint Cup" race. The NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series are also run at Talladega along with ARCA ReMax Series. The Tri-oval track has banking of 33 degrees in the turns, the tri-oval has banking of 18 degrees and the straights have banking of 3 degrees. Because of its length and excessive banking there were safety concerns for the drivers which led to the Professional Drivers Association (PDA), a union of drivers led by Richard Petty, to go on strike the day before the inaugural Talladega 500. Bill France Sr. drove at high speeds around the track and NASCAR ran a successful support race but the PDA drivers were not convinced and drivers from the previous day were asked to stand in and the future of the race track was secured. The address for Talladega Superspeedway is 3366 Speedway Boulevard. Talladega, AL 35160.
