Richmond International Raceway

Richmond International Raceway
Richmond International Raceway

Richmond International Raceway is one of the oldest tracks used by NASCAR and is loved by the drivers and the fans alike. It first opened in 1946 under the name of Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds (1946 – 1955) and has operated under three other names until 1988 when the track became known by its present name of Richmond International Raceway.

The first NASCAR race to be hosted here was in 1953. The facility is one of a few that hosts all of its events under lights providing exciting night racing action and gives a total commitment to the racing fans. It hosts two NASCAR weekends featuring the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the NASCAR Nationwide Series and has hosted the "One Last Race to Make The Chase", the last race before the "Chase for the Sprint Cup" at the end of the season since its conception in 2004.

The track is so popular that it sold out of tickets for the NASCAR Sprint Cup races on thirty three consecutive occasions until in 2008 the sell-out ended through an economic downturn and the impact of the tropical storm, Hanna. The track is the longest of the short tracks on the circuit at 0.75 mile and has an asphalt surface. The D shaped oval has 14 degree banking on the turns with 8 degrees on the front stretch and 2 degrees on the back stretch and is almost certainly every driver’s favourite track with a unique layout traditionally featuring side-by-side driving at speed high enough for a superspeedway feel. Richmond International Raceway can be found at 600 E. Laburnum Ave. Richmond, VA 23222.
