Built in 1909 the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the original speedway and the first to incorporate the word speedway into its name. The sporting facility is the largest in the world with a permanent seating capacity of more than 257,000 with temporary infield seating that can raise the capacity to more than 400,000.
Steeped in motor racing traditions the speedway was placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1987 making it the only landmark to be affiliated with motor racing history. Situated at 4790 West, 16th Street, Speedway, Indianapolis, IN 46222 it is owned by Hulman & Co. and it is the home of the Indianapolis 500 and the coveted NASCAR Brickyard 400. The relatively flat rectangular oval track, the banking is just 9 degrees on the turns with no banking on the straights, is 2 ½ miles long and is more or less unchanged since it was originally built, it has four ¼ mile turns, two 5.8 mile long straights between the fourth and first turn and the second and third turns with two 1/8 mile straights (short chutes) between the first and second and the third and fourth turns. The surface is asphalt and brick and the grounds is the home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame which opened in 1956.
