Situated at 500 Speedway Boulevard, in Joliet, Illinois Chicagoland Speedway is on a site adjacent to its sister drag racing circuit, the Route 66 Raceway. It is owned by The International Speedway Corporation, constructed between September 1999 and Spring 2001 and was officially opened in July 2000.
The complex has a seating capacity of 75,000. The speedway hosts NASCAR events including the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series and the Camping World Truck Series. Chicagoland also hosts ARCA events and up until 2011 hosted the IZOD IndyCar Series where many close finishes have been witnessed including the closest finish in IndyCar history in 2002. The D-shaped tri-oval track is made of asphalt. The 1.5 mile track has 18 degree banking on the turns, 11 degrees on the front stretch and 5 degrees on the back stretch and is purpose-built for stock car racing. Track records include:- for the Sprint Cup Series, qualifying race with Jimmie Johnson (2005) is 188.147 mph and for the actual race with David Reutimann (2010) an average speed of 145.138 mph, The Nationwide Series track records are:- qualifying race with Ryan Newman (2005) is 188.147 mph and the actual race with Joey Logano (2007) is 147.340 mph and with the Camping World Series the records are:- for qualifying with Todd Bodine (2010) the record stands at 173,84 mph and the actual race with Kyle Busch (2010) is 132.610 mph.
The complex also hosts three driving schools to give fans the chance at getting behind the wheel of either an authentic NASCAR-style stock car or Indy-style race car and taking it around the track at speed around 160 mph. Detailed information is available on the Chicagoland Website.
Tickets and admissions
2011 Season tickets are available from $140 to $295 depending on where you choose to sit. Individual races range from $180 to $25 depending on the race that you choose. For June weekend the prices range from £110 to $35 and for September weekend from $260 to $120. Important Gate Policies
Permitted Spectator Items: Spectators can take the following items into the grandstand:- Guests may enter the grandstand with the following: One soft-sided bag or cooler, no larger than 6 x 6 x 12 inches that can contain ice, food & beverages – NO GLASS ALLOWED, Fanny packs, purses, backpacks, camera bags and other small bags, no larger than 18x18x4 inches, are also permitted, but are subject to search at any time, Cell phones, Scanners and head-sets, Cameras, Binoculars, Seat cushions, Pagers.
Shirts: Required. Sleeveless shirts not allowed. Shoes: Required. Open-toed shoes not allowed. Shorts/skirts: Not allowed. Alcoholic beverages: Not allowed.
Prohibited Spectator Items
The following items are not allowed past the turnstiles and into the grandstands:- Drugs (unless prescribed by a medical physician and medically necessary), Umbrellas, Glass Containers, Pets (unless registered as an aide dog), Fireworks, sharp objects, firearms or weapons of any kind, Bicycle, roller blades, wagons, scooters and skateboards, Strollers, Folding chairs, Laser pointers, Large flags or poles of any type, Any items deemed to be an obstruction to other spectators, Squirt/water guns or spray bottles, Hydration backpacks (i.e. CamelBaks®)
Parking
All inbound traffic will be directed to the nearest parking lot. No exceptions. Daily parking is always free. If you are paying for daily parking, you are not in a Chicagoland Speedway parking lot! No overnight camping is allowed in Chicagoland Speedway parking lots. Vehicles left overnight in general parking areas will be towed at owner’s expense. Chicagoland Speedway is not responsible for theft, injury, or damage to personal property while at Chicagoland Speedway.
Camping
There is communal trackside (Skyline Terrace) and fan RV camping available.
