Charlotte Motor Speedway is owned by Speedway Motorsports, Inc. and can be found in Concord, North Carolina. Formerly known as Lowe’s Motor Speedway the 2,000 acre complex was designed and built by Bruton Smith and NASCAR driver Curtis Turner and opened in 1960.
The complex consists of three tracks: - the Quad-oval has an asphalt surface and is 1.5 miles long with four turns that have a banking of 24 degrees with the straights having 5 degree banking. The lap record of 0:24.49 was set in 1998 by Tony Stewart in the IndyCar Series. This track hosts the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series, the Camping World Truck Series and the Whelan Southern Modified Tour. Within the oval is a 2.25 miles road course and a 0.6 mile Kart Course and also contains a ¼ mile flat oval that is used for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, the SUMMER Shootout Series and other events such as the Legends Million.
The State-of-the art, ZMAX Dragway, drag racing strip also has an asphalt surface and is 0.25 mile long. It is the only all concrete, four lane strip in the USA and hosts NHRA events including the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. The third track that incorporates the newest ideas and most up-to-date features has a clay surface, is 0.4 miles in length and hosts dirt racing including the INEX RaceCeiver World of Outlaws Series finals.
The complex is one of the busiest sports venues in the country hosting Auto Fairs, exhibitions and has been used for commercial and movie making including "Days of Thunder". There are several driving schools available at the complex.
