Bristol Motor Speedway

Bristol Motor Speedway, formerly known as Bristol International Raceway and Bristol Raceway is located in Bristol, Tennessee is the 4th largest sports venue in America, and the 8th largest venue in the world, with a capacity of up to 165,000 people. Construction started in 1960 and the track saw the first NASCAR race on the 30th July, 1961. Bristol Motorspeedway is very popular with the fans as it has distinctive features such as particularly steep banking, the four turns are 24 - 30 decrees (once advertised as 36 degrees) and the straights are 6 - 10 degrees, a concrete surface with two pit roads and stadium styled seating areas. It has a short oval track, 0.533 mile, making the speed far less than on a typical NASCAR oval track but, because of its high banking, is considerably faster than other short tracks. The initial starting grid of forty three cars in the Cup and Nationwide Series, (thirty six in the Truck Series) takes up almost half way around the track, meaning the cars that qualified more slowly begin the race almost a half of a lap down and the congestion caused is similar to “flying fighter jets in a gymnasium” and contact is almost inevitable. The track allows for the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series, the Whelan Modified, USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series and drag racing (the quarter mile strip is nicknamed “Thunder Valley”). Bristol Motor Speedway was one of the racing tracks used in the 1990 film Days of Thunder starring Tom Cruise. The 2006 Disney-Pixar film, Cars, used Bristol Motor Speedway as the basis for the racetrack seen in the film's opening race, the "Motor Speedway of the South." The size of the track was increased to give it a more stadium-like appearance. Thousands of fans come from all parts of the country to get the unique Bristol Motor Speedway’s racing experience. During the Christmas period the motor Speedway holds a miles-long Christmas light display that finishes with a lap on the speedway track itself. Bristol Motor Speedway has many exciting facilities on offer and fans can make their visit as inexpensive or as luxurious as they prefer and visiting the web site to see what is on offer would certainly be beneficial. http://www.bristolmotorspeedway.com/tickets.
