Auto Club Speedway

Auto Club Speedway, formerly the California Speedway (1997 to 2007) is situated in San Bernardino County, California, near the former sites of the Ontario Motor Speedway and Riverside International Raceway and is about one hour east of Los Angeles. It was announced on the 29th April 1994 that a new racetrack would be built on the site of a former steel mill. Three months later the 91,200 capacity Speedway became the first to have a commitment from Bill France, Sr. for the Winston Cup Series races to run at a race track long before it was opened. The opening ceremony took place on the 20th June 1997 and the first race, a NASCAR West Series race, took place the following day. This versatile race track has the facilities to encompass many events such as NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series and AMA Superbike races on the two mile long D-shaped oval which has an asphalt surface with four turns. It has 14 degree banking on the turns, 11 degrees on the front stretch and 3 degrees on the back stretch. It also has an interior Test Circuit that is 1.45 miles long with thirteen turns, a Sports Car Course that is 2.8 miles long with twenty one turns, a Motorcycle Course, 2.36 miles in length with twenty one turns and finally, a Drag Strip of ¼ of a mile. The lap record stands at 241.426 mph, set on the 28th October 2000, by Gil de Ferran of Penske Racing (CART). The straights are fast but the turns are fairly flat making it difficult for drivers to handle the car. The first and only race for the 2011 season will be the Auto Club 400 scheduled for the 27th of March.

The Auto Club Speedway is often used for filming television shows, films and commercials. In 2000 parts of the film "Charlie’s Angels" were filmed, 2004 saw it used for parts of "Herbie: Fully Loaded" and in 2007 actors Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson drove a Dodge Challenger and a Shelby Mustang around the 2 mile speedway.
