1959 BMW Isetta Custom Dragster

1959 BMW Isetta Custom Dragster (source : www.germancarforum.com)

Now hear is something you don’t see everyday, unless you are at the The Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum where it is an exhibit, a BMW’s Isetta drag racing car. The car was inspired by a Hot Wheel Isetta drag car toy and looks almost identical.

Rather than the pathetic 13 horsepower that is normally associated with these vehicles the car is now powered by a 502 cubic inch V8 generating about 730 hp and only weighing a mere 1520 lb. The museum that is displaying the vehicle doesn’t quote the overall performance figures but does describe it as !very very fast! and !very very loud”!

All the power is delivered through a single Sumitoma HTRZ II 285/35ZR18 tire which must be interesting to watch to say the least. The builders of the dragster also added a switch that allows the dragster to spit 4 foot flames from its exhaust!

Mental Breakdown – Volkswagen Bus Dragster

There can’t be many people that would choose a 1965 VW Bus as the basis of a Dragster but that is exactly what Wayne Allman has done. When asked he said “I have always loved installing powerful engines in the wrong cars” which couldn’t be true enough.

VW Bus Dragster - Side View

Allman’s VW bus is highly modified with only the cab remaining intact. The power is coming from an 8.4-liter super-charged Keith Black V8 Hemi unit that runs on methanol and delivers 1,700bhp.

During the first outing of the Bus at Bug Jam he managed to perform a few burnouts, followed by a sixty-foot run that netted a 1.2-second clocking. However there was an issue with the Lenco transmission that prevented him from making a representative pass.

Fiat 500 Drag Racer

Legacy Innovations - Fiat 500 Drag Car

I used to own a Fiat 500 many years ago but it never looked or performed like this one!

The guys at Legacy Innovations took a standard Fiat 500 and replaced pretty much everything except the body to increase the cubic capacity of this beast from a mere 500cc to a whopping 7000cc.

The car has been fitted with a chrome molly roll cage and a near standard 725-HP 427 small block engine. The neat bit is how you get access to running gear and interior with a hydraulic lifting system that raises and lowers the entire body. Take a look at the video below;

2000hp Twin Turbo Mustang

Twin Turbo Mustang

Marshall Carpenter has commissioned Bridge Racing to build a twin turbocharged drag car to compete in the True Street Eliminator competition. His previous car was a 2005 Mustang with a single 76mm turbo which was unfortunately not quite enough to compete successfully within the chosen class. The new car is based on a Fox bodied Mustang with two turbos capable of pushing the power output of the engine up to a whopping 2000 hp.

The car must be capable of being driven to the track and fueled on normal petrol available at a standard fuel station which the company aim to achieve. They estimate that the car should be capable of around 18 mpg running on standard fuel but then be capable of running in the 7 second band whilst running on racing fuel on the track.

4.5L Engine

The engine is a bespoke 5.4L Mod Motor built by Bridge Racing with a pair of 71mm turbo chargers mounted half-way down the car with air ducts feeding into them in the rear quarter panels.

You can see more information at their Bridge Racing website.
